WorldWide FX was the lead VFX studio bringing Patrick Robinson's bestseller book to the big screen.Our team was led by the VFX Supervisor Stanislav Dragiev who worked alongside the director Donovan Marsh and the Production VFX Supervisor Sean Farrow to create more than 600 breathtaking shots for "Hunter Killer".Our work was varied and included everything from set extensions to full CG underwater environment.It was an exciting and rewarding experience to be able to be a part of such an ambitious project. We were able to successfully complete many challenging tasks such as: achieving a realistic underwater environment with visible details even during the night; realistically simulating underwater explosions; recreating huge objects such as American and Russian submarines in great detail.We also tried out some different approaches in our work such as rendering particles for the 3D environments in Nuke instead of Houdini. The studio was incredibly supportive in particular Walter Hamada and Geoff Johns at DC and Anne Kolbe at Warner Bros. Visual effects for the film were created by DNEG, Scanline VFX, Method Studios, Luma Pictures, Lola VFX, Industrial Light & Magic,[69] Cinesite, Rise FX, Rodeo FX, Crafty Apes, Perception NYC, Digital Domain, and The Third Floor. DNEG worked on over 500 shots, including the effects for Ghost—which were shared with the other vendors—the third act chase sequence, and the final Ghost fight as Hank and Janet are returning from the quantum realm. For the "macro-photography" sequences in the film, DNEG took a different approach from their work in Ant-Man due to issues including trying to get a camera to seem small enough to capture the small actions. Though some of the film was shot with a Frazier lens that provides extra depth of field, DNEG would still need to "re-project the road higher and "raise the floor level" to simulate a tiny sized camera". As the third act chase sequence was mainly shot in Atlanta, while being set in San Francisco, DNEG VFX Supervisor Alessandro Ongaro noted it required "extensive environment work" with background elements in some shots not being salvageable at all. DNEG ultimately created 130 unique environments for the chase. Clear Angle aided DNEG with the Lidar surveying and photography of San Francisco, and were able to get their information for Lombard Street down to the millimeter resolution. Lola once again worked on the de-aging sequences with Douglas, Pfeiffer, and Fishburne. The flashback sequences featuring a younger Hank Pym were set around the same time as the flashback sequences of Ant-Man, so Lola were able to use a similar process, referencing Douglas' appearance in Wall Street (1987) and having the actor on set in a different wardrobe and wig. In order to get the delicate shots of the buzzard without causing any harm or distress to the bird, Scandinava used a hidden mesh harness concealed underneath the birds' feathers with wires attached to each side of it to stabilize the birds' body. In order to get her to open her wings, they blew air at the bird from underneath which made her naturally open her wins to ride the artificial thermal. No animals were hurt during production!

World War Z, Brad Pitt didn't take long to be crowned the highest-grossing zombie film of all time. But what makes this movie so captivating is the realistic visual effects created by computer graphics artists. The talented group of people worked around the clock to pull off one of the most believable apocalyptic films we've ever seen. And now that the sequel has been delayed, we thought we'd take a look at what the original film looks like without all the snazzy the visual effects. Prepared to be amazed. The AgentsWhile watching the film, you probably wondered how they were able to get so many extras for many of these shots. But the truth is, most of the zombies are actually agents - digital bots that were created by visual effects artists. Up to 8,500 of these agents were used per scene, and over 24 different body types were digitally created using various textures to give each bot its own unique appearance. MPC did an amazing job building unique humans and zombies that had many moviegoers fooled. Men, women, and children body types were used as templates for these characters. Various zombies were then built, from those with small blood stains to the ones with opened wounds and rotting teeth. The computer-generated people and zombies were also given their own unique CG clothing. Massive CrowdsCinesite were behind many of the aerial shots of Philadelphia where thousands of people were running in streets as they were chased by zombies. These scenes were first filmed on a smaller scale, and then Cinesite bulked up the real, on-set extras by adding 25,000 virtual bots to the crowd. Helicopter ScenesActors were filmed in front of a green screen on a soundstage. Later, visual effects artists created a virtual set and added the helicopter's rotor…

In episode four of HBO's Game of Thrones season seven, “The Spoils of War,” Daenerys and her Dothraki horde engaged the Lannister army in a fiery fray brought to life with help from visual effects by Deluxe’s Iloura. Reteaming with VFX Supervisor Joe Bauer and VFX Producer Steve Kullback, Iloura VFX Supervisors Glenn Melenhorst and Josh Simmonds led Iloura artists in crafting the visuals. Having honed its crowd pipeline and in-house tools for handling the enormous datasets required for large scale scenes featuring mounted riders and infantry for “Battle of the Bastards,” Iloura artists were able to draw upon that expertise in augmenting filmed elements or, in some cases, creating full CG shots, including some with thousands of soldiers in hand-to-hand combat. Iloura also created extensive set extensions as well as CG smoke and fire, and composited sequences with assets from multiple vendors to seamless effect. Game of Thrones “The Spoils of War” episode aired in the US August 6 on HBO and in Australia August 7 on Foxtel’s showcase channel.
