Set in the backdrop of early 19th Century Kerala, this movie portrays the valorous deeds of Kochunni, an indomitable local character who became folklore for his empathy for the destitute and his enmity towards the violence and oppression of the affluent.
Ill-treated since childhood by the wealthy people, Kayamkulam Kochunni decides to steal from the rich and feeds the poor and the lower caste community, thus growing into a hero for the downtrodden.
Filled with enchanting events, the movie required strong visuals to aid the storyline, all of which needed to be time-period coherent. So apart from human characters and locations, we trained our focus on various animals that feature in complicated action sequences, and a series of underwater, cyclone and other environmental effects, all of which we designed for impact and delivered as intended.
The movie released belatedly due to floods in Kerala around the time. But when it did, it went on to become Malayalam cinema's second ever - after Puli Murugan - to cross Rs 100 crore in collections.
So, Puli Murugan and Kayamkulam Kochunni - Malayalam cinema's top two blockbusters.
