The Walt Disney Family Museum Teen Animation Festival International (TAFI) showcases animation created by artists ages 13 through 19. This unique and lively animation festival specifically designed for teens celebrates its fourth year in 2017. Welcoming entries from around the world, the festival provides all participating animators with educational and collaborative opportunities, as well as a chance to win awards including trophies, film and animation studio tours, and museum memberships. The 2016 festival offered all participants opportunities for one-on-one portfolio reviews, a panel discussion with industry recruiters, and a keynote presentation by Academy Award®-winning Pixar director, screenwriter, and animator Mark Andrews.

The Teen Animation Festival International (TAFI) is made possible, in part, by a grant from the Wells Fargo Foundation.

About the Festival

TAFI 2017 will highlight excellence in school and independent animation programs as well as outstanding achievement by individual students. The seven submission categories—School Show Reel, Individual Student Show Reel, Special Effects Reel, 2D Short Film, 3D Short Film, Experimental Short Film, and PSA (Public Service Announcement or Informational Film)—reflect the breadth and creative variety of student productions. Additional awards will be given for the Best Film by a Student 14 and Under, Museum Staff Pick Award, Best of Festival, and Second in Festival.

Basic Requirements:

• All applicants must be between the ages of 13 and 19 during the 2016–17 school year
• Works could have been started anytime, but all works must have been completed after Sunday, May 15, 2016
• All films must be the eligible applicant’s original work—the films must be written, directed, filmed, and edited by eligible applicants.
• Any media uses, including music, must be copyright free or cited per the copyright owner’s terms. No use of non-student IP with approval or copyright infringement allowed.
• All submissions must be suitable for the festival audience (MPAA rating of PG-13)
• Films that exceed the required time limit will not be accepted—time limit does not include the required slate and black frames
• Submissions must be submitted no later than Friday, March 17, 2017 at 11:59pm PST, late submissions will not be considered.

Submissions will be reviewed by a panel of judges from feature film, television, video game studios, and university programs. Each applicant and credited teacher will be invited to the festival on Saturday, April 29, and Sunday, April 30, 2017. The public is invited to view student work during a screening of select TAFI entries on Sunday, April 30, 2017. All student applicants will receive four free admission tickets to the museum redeemable Saturday, April 29 or Sunday, April 30, 2017.

Submission Guidelines

Each entry requires a separate slate and submission form—do not enter more than one film per submission form. Reels may contain more than one work, but must be uploaded as a single film. Opening, closing titles, and credits are required and are considered part of the film’s time restriction.

Submission Categories

• SCHOOL REEL: 2-minute maximum. May include any and all animation categories and include beginning test animation (ball bounce, etc.), walk cycles, traditional and digital clips and vignettes, short film clips, etc.
• INDIVIDUAL REEL: 2-minute maximum. May include any and all animation categories and include beginning test animation (ball bounce etc.), walk cycles, traditional and digital clips and vignettes, short film clips, etc.
• SPECIAL EFFECTS REEL: 2-minute maximum. May include multiple effects clips or vignettes, fire, water, smoke, etc.
• SHORT ANIMATED FILM 2D TRADITIONAL OR 2D DIGITAL: 3-minute maximum. May be hand drawn frame-by-frame either digitally or on paper or other physical surface or created digitally in After Effects, Flash, etc.
• SHORT ANIMATED FILM 3D TRADITIONAL OR 3D DIGITAL: 3-minute maximum. May be created using 3-D animation software or traditional 3-D materials (clay or Sculpey etc.)
• SHORT ANIMATED FILM, EXPERIMENTAL: 3-minute maximum. Mixed media, abstract, stop motion, found object, etc.
• PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT (PSA) OR INFORMATIONAL FILM: 3-minute maximum. Any medium; 2D traditional, 2D Digital, 3-D, or experimental.

Time limits do not include the required slate and black frames.
