A total of sixteen animated films to screen for competition at the 43rd Annecy International Animation Film Festival

An addition of 8 shortlisted animated films have been opted to screen at Annecy 2019 for competition.

Apart from the existing list of eight films for competition selected to be showcased, the facilitators of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival have shortlisted eight additional films to screen for competition at their 43rd edition. Here is a list of the animated films to be featured in the competition:


La Fameuse Invasion des ours en Sicile (The Bears Famous Invasion) by Lorenzo Mattiotti (France, Italy) - The Bear King's son, Tonio, is kidnapped by hunters in the Sicilian mountains. The harsh winter threatens King Léonce’s people with famine, and he decides to invade the land of the men. He finally finds Tonio, with the help of a wizard, and his army, but soon ends up discovering that the land of men is not meant for bears to live in.

Ternet Ninja (Checkered Ninja) by Anders Matthesen, Thorbjørn Christoffersen (Denmark) - Uncle Stewart gets a ninja doll for Alex after his trip from Thailand, and soon Alex realises that the doll can help him deal with problems he has at school as it is alive. However, Alex makes up his mind to help out in return but soon realises that the doll is on a goal to take revenge and is possessed, too.

Buñuel en el laberinto de las tortugas (Buñuel in the Labyrinth of Turtles) by Salvador Simo (Spain, Netherlands) - Luis Buñuel turns into a broke deject post the scandal in Paris in 1930, after the screening of “The Golden Age”. But, after winning a lottery ticket, Buñuel’s life changes and he makes the film “Land Without Bread”.

The Relative Worlds by Yuhei Sakuragi (Japan) - A high-school boy with an ordinary life living in Tokyo, Shin, meets his double Jin who declares to have come from another world. 

According to Jin, a parallel world exists where the evil Princess Kotoko reigns. Jin has come to Tokyo to kill her Kotoko double, who happens to be Shin's closest friend, Kotori.

L'Extraordinaire Voyage de Marona (Marona's Fantastic Tale) by Anca Damian (Belgium, France, Romania) - Victim of an accident, a small female dog remembers her different masters that she has unconditionally loved. Due to her unfailing empathy, her life becomes a lesson about love.

Ride Your Wave by Masaaki Yuasa (Japan) - Hinako, a girl who loves surfing, moves to a seaside town. During a fire, she is saved by Minato a firefighter. This meeting bears witness to an improbable fusion between two beings from opposing elements. But, Minato drowns while out surfing alone. When everyone else is trying to get over Minato’s death, Hinako hangs onto her friend’s spirit that reappears in the form of water.

White Snake by Kahong Wong and Ji Zhao (China) - A young woman called Blanca, who'd lost her memory was saved by a snake catcher, Xuan. But, she is far from being out of danger. They go in search of clues to her identity. Along the way they encounter one dangerous obstacle after another, and gradually develop feelings for one another. Just as they are close to working out who she really is, disaster looms.

The Wonderland by Keiichi Hara (Japan) - Akane is a young shy girl, lacking in self-confidence. The day before her birthday she goes to her Aunt’s antique shop to choose herself a present. Suddenly a very mysterious man appears from her Aunt’s basement: Hippocrates the Alchemist. He comes from another world that is threatened by a serious drought. He believes that Akane is the Goddess of the Green Wind and that she can save their world.
